Library Cards for Kids
For all children 13 years and under, a parent or guardian must sign the back of the child's library card. The parent and guardian must also submit their name and membership number to the librarian at the time the child's card is issued.

Your signature on the card means that you accept responsibility for your child's use of the library's services and facilities. You agree to return books in good condition within the borrowing period (usually 3 weeks). You also agree to pay for any late fines and/or lost and damaged items charged to your child's account.

A library card for the North Grenville Public Library also grants members access to and use of our public access computers and free Internet services. Users must be registered to use the Internet. Registration requires that users agree to abide by all NGPL regulations. Violation of NGPL regulations may result in suspension of registration and/or suspension of other library privileges. Users must sign a waiver form before using the public computer workstations. A parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver form for children under the age of 16.

Parents are always responsible for their child's use of and behaviour in the library's facilities, whether or not the parents are in attendance.

It may be in the best interest of both the parent and child if the parent retains possession of his or her child's library card. This grants the parent greater control and supervision of the child's use of the library.

Unattended Children in the Library
Library facilities are not licensed or designed to provide basic care needs. Any public place may be dangerous for a child who is left unattended. It is impossible for the library staff to guarantee a safe environment. The Library encourages parents to consider the safety and well being of their children and the needs of other library users of all ages. Children under age 10 must be attended by a parent or other responsible caregiver (age 18 or over) at all times in the Library.

Rules of Conduct
The North Grenville Public Library has adopted various rules of conduct when using our facilities. These rules are intended to prevent disruptions to library services, ensure the safety of the public and library staff, and maintain the security of Library property. The rules must be obeyed at all times. They are, in a nutshell:

  • No abusive or threatening language
  • No access to "staff only" areas
  • No animals or pets (seeing-eye dogs permitted)
  • No food or drink
  • No loitering
  • No misuse or damage to library property
  • No photographing, filming or videorecording
  • No smoking
  • No soliciting
  • No sports equipment
  • No unattended children under the age of 10
In addition:
  • All books, bags and papers must be made available for inspection by Library staff on request
  • The Library cannot be held responsible for personal items lost or stolen on the premises
  • Members of the public are not permitted in the Library with bare feet or torsos
  • Library materials are not permitted in the public washrooms in the Library
Library facilities are available to all members of the public provided they conduct themselves in a reasonable manner. If patrons conduct themselves in an objectionable or noisy manner, staff will, whenever possible, warn the patron that the behaviour is unacceptable. If no proper response is made, the patron will be asked to leave. If the patron will not leave, police will be called. In any extreme or threatening situation, police will be called immediately.

Violation of the Rules of Conduct may result in cost-recovery charges, suspension of Library privileges, exclusion from Library property or prosecution. These rules of conduct were approved by the North Grenville Public Library Board November 14, 2002.

Internet Safety
Undoubtedly, there will be material available on the Internet that you find controversial or inappropriate for both you and your children. As such, it is highly recommended that parents supervise their child's Internet use.

With the exception of the Children's Computer at our South Gower Branch, the Library's public access computers are unfiltered and children and youth will be able to access all available sites on the Internet. Since it is the user's responsibility to question the nature of materials, both online and in print, we recommend that you supervise your child's online access at the Library.

In order to help protect our young patrons, the Library requests that all children under the age of 16 provide a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian before they will be granted access to a computer. Waiver forms are available at all our branches.

If you would like to discuss any of the above information with Library staff, please contact the Manager of Library Services, Sue Higgins, by phone at (613) 258-4711 or via email at shiggins@ripnet.com.

Visit our Kids' Internet Safety page for online safety tips you can discuss with your children.
